What is a shipping agent in freight forwarding?

An agent representing the owner/charterer of a ship at the ports that the ship visits. The shipping agent takes care of all transactions between the ship’s owner and port operators, authorities, vendors supplying the ship, fuel suppliers, and other parties. The shipping agent also receives and releases cargo.
