What is a wharfage in freight forwarding?

This is a charge imposed by port owners for any freight passing through, and being handled by, the facility, regardless of the mode of transportation involved. The wharfage charge is imposed on carriers by the port-owning authority, and the carriers pass the costs on to through their fee tariffs.
