What is demurrage in freight forwarding?

Shippers and consignees are allotted a certain amount of time by a carrier, for loading their goods onto a vehicle, ship, or aircraft and for offloading the same. Demurrage is the term used when this allotted time is exceeded for reasons beyond the carrier’s control.
