Consumers around the world value Italian products for their refinement and quality. So it should be no surprise to know that international freight shipping from Italy is a lucrative activity, both for the businesses around the world that deal in Italian goods, and for the freight companies that move them.

It may not be hard to find a freight forwarder to help you ship goods out of Italy, but finding the right one for your business may not be so straightforward. For starters, you may have to build up a relationship with your chosen international freight services provider before you can even ascertain if you’ve made the right selection.

However, that’s not the case with Shipa Freight. We are live and online right now. Unless you particularly feel the need to speak with us on the phone, everything you need is available with just a few mouse clicks and simple forms to complete.

Before you jump to our homepage to get an international freight-shipping quote though, you might like to review the information on this page. It addresses businesses in Italy with plans to export, or any traders new to shipping from Italy to the US or elsewhere.

Standards and Customs Procedures for Shipments from Italy

Let’s begin with some good news for anyone who will be shipping from Italy to the US or other parts of the world. As a member state of the EU, Italy applies no direct taxation on the export of goods. The EU has abolished export taxes and you should be able to attain exemption from value-added tax (VAT) on your goods, as long as you can provide satisfactory evidence that they have physically left the country.

There are no general restrictions on exports from Italy, although of course, export licensing does apply to some types of goods. If your shipment contains goods controlled by license, you will need to provide your license details to Italian customs, along with the export declaration (which is required for all shipments, whether controlled by license or not).

Export Declaration Requirements

The export declaration (which your international freight forwarder should prepare and submit for you) must include the following information. This is needed in order for the Customs service to clear your shipment for loading aboard a vessel or aircraft:

  • **Product details: **Including the HS codes, names, quantities, and value of goods in your shipment;

  • **Transport and warehousing details: **Name of the company providing transport and international freight services, and details of the warehouse from where your goods will be dispatched;

  • Destination details: The final destination of your shipment, plus details of the party who will receive the goods.

Once your freight forwarder has submitted the export declaration, your shipment must be presented at the customs office located where the goods will exit the country. This is known as the “office of exit”.

If you are a Shipa Freight customer, we will manage all customs procedures on your behalf, ensuring all necessary documents are completed and submitted. You or your company will simply need to provide us with the necessary information.

Export Restrictions in Italy

As previously mentioned, export restrictions in Italy, and in the EU generally, are unlikely to impact your plans for shipping from Italy to US or other international destinations. However, if you wish to export goods that have potential military uses, you should check whether they fall under the umbrellas of “dual use” goods. If so, you may need to apply for an export license.

The majority of shipping companies in Italy will be familiar with the types of goods that need licensing, so if you use an Italian freight forwarder, you can ask them for advice about your goods. Otherwise, you might wish to check the situation directly with the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency.
