FCL and LCL Ocean Freight Services From Germany to the UAE
Shipa Freight offers full-container-load (FCL) and less-than-container-load (LCL) ocean shipping from any location in Germany, with delivery through Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah ports into the seven states of the United Arab Emirates.
In most cases, unless you are transporting enough goods to fill a 20-foot shipping container, LCL shipping will be your least costly option. However, delivery will take longer than FCL. That's because your goods will be consolidated into a container with other customers' shipments. They must then be deconsolidated after arrival in the UAE.
If you would like your products to ship faster, you can send it as FCL freight, even if you don’t have quite enough to fill a container. When your shipment is not sharing container-space with others, shipping time is reduced. We can move your consignment directly from door to port in Germany, and from port to door in the UAE, without any additional steps required for consolidation and deconsolidation.
Your ocean freight will set off by road from the point of origin in Germany, to arrive at Hamburg or Bremerhaven. After the customs authority releases your goods for export, they will ship overseas to your chosen UAE gateway. We will then clear your shipment through customs and dispatch it to its final destination in the Emirates.
Whether you choose FCL or LCL shipping, you’ll enjoy the same Shipa Freight benefits, which include:
- Fast online freight quotes, inclusive of all shipping costs, broken down for total visibility
- Online freight booking and payment
- Real-time shipment tracking and status notifications
- A customer service team available around the clock to help you
- A complete logistics service, including domestic and international shipping and customs clearing
Germany: Ports of Origin
Bremerhaven and Hamburg are the two gateways we use for shipping LCL and FCL freight to the UAE. Here are a few details of each port, just for your information.
While perhaps best known as a gateway for automobile exports, Bremerhaven is the 27th busiest container port globally, and the fourth most active in Europe. Its four container terminals can handle vast quantities of freight and together provide the largest closed container turnover area in the world. The newest addition, Terminal 4, can manage more than 7 million TEUs. It has a quay length of more than five kilometers, enabling 14 mega-container vessels to be accommodated for loading and unloading.
Owned By: Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
Annual Container Volume: >5 million TEUs.
Hamburg is Germany’s largest port. It’s the 19th largest port in the world and the third busiest in Europe in terms of container throughput. Like Bremerhaven, the port of Hamburg has four container terminals. There is a total of 22 berths for container vessels and more than 80 quay cranes available for the loading and offloading of shipping containers. Stretching along the south bank of the River Elbe, Hamburg is a tidal port, and is afforded the unofficial title as Germany’s Gateway to the World. Container exports shipped via Hamburg exceed four million TEUs annually.
Owned By: Hamburg Port Authority.
Annual Container Volume: >8.5 million TEUs.
UAE Ports of Arrival for Freight From Germany
Although 13 commercial seaports exist in the UAE, most freight to and from the country moves through Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, Khor Fakkan in Sharjah, and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. Shipa Freight can move your goods from Germany into any of the seven emirates via these ports, whether you prefer to use LCL shipping or transport freight in full containers.
As well as being the Middle East’s largest port, Jebel Ali has also been voted the best in the region for the last quarter of a century. It was built in 1970 to add to Dubai’s ocean freight capacity, when throughput outgrew the then main gateway of Port Rashid. Today, Jebel Ali is among the world’s ten largest container ports, and is the largest man-made harbor in the world. Some 80 shipping services per week connect Jebel Ali to around 150 other ports worldwide, including, of course, Bremerhaven and Hamburg in Germany.
Owned By: DP World.
Annual Container Volume: >14.5 million TEUs.
Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port is not exceptionally large, but that will change as it is still in the early phases of development. By 2030 it is expected to have a capacity to equal, or perhaps exceed that of Jebel Ali. What it lacks in current size though, Khalifa makes up for in modernity.
Unsurprisingly for a port that opened in 2012, Khalifa is packed with hi-tech facilities, including the only semi-automated container terminal in the GCC. The port’s systems, including GPS-enabled container tracking, are integrated with the customs service to ensure smooth freight throughput. Indeed, high levels of integration and innovation make Khalifa an ideal gateway for your shipments into the UAE.
Owned By: Abu Dhabi Ports.
Annual Container Volume: >14.5 million TEUs.
Khor Fakkan is the principal port of Sharjah and the only port in the UAE located outside the Strait of Hormuz. Offering excellent facilities and an efficient container operation, Sharjah is more than just a primary entry point for Emirates-bound freight. It's also a critical transshipment hub for containerized goods.
With its reputation as a top-performing container port, Khor Fakkan should be a preferred UAE gateway if you're concerned about rapid transit from port to warehouse. Transit times for shipments from Germany via the Sharjah port can be up to five days less than those using other UAE ocean freight terminals.
Owned By: Sharjah Ports Authority.
Annual Container Volume: >3 million TEUs.
Ocean Freight Routes and Transit Times
Unlike some other port-to-port trade lanes, you won’t be overwhelmed by choice when shipping FCL or LCL freight from Germany to the United Arab Emirates. Our routes all exit Germany via Hamburg or Bremerhaven, and enter the UAE through Jebel Ali, Sharjah, or Abu Dhabi.
You can see some of the possible routes in the table below, along with average transit times between German and Emirati ports. Don't forget that when estimating total transit times, you will need to include the time that your goods might spend in customs. You'll also need to account for domestic transit times, and consolidation time if you are using LCL services.
|Port of Origin||Destination Port||**Est. Transit Time **|
|Bremerhaven||Abu Dhabi||33 Days|
|Bremerhaven||Jebel Ali||31 Days|
|Hamburg||Jebel Ali||31 Days|
|Hamburg||Abu Dhabi||33 Days|
Air Freight Services From Germany to the UAE
If transit times measured in weeks are not satisfactory for your supply chain, air freight will probably be your preferred method of export from Germany to the UAE. Naturally, the freight cost of flying your goods will be higher than ocean shipping, however. For that reason, you should consider the total value of your German exports and the potential air-freight shipping fees as a percentage of that value.
Nevertheless, when you need shorter delivery times for your international orders, increased security, or flexible shipping schedules, air freight will typically be the way to go. Our shipping rates are as competitive as any forwarder, and with several carriers flying daily from Germany to UAE, you'll rarely struggle to book a flight.
As with our ocean freight services, we offer door to door or port to port services. Alternatively, we can manage your air freight with integrated overland transportation in either the export or import country.
Germany Airports of Origin
Frankfurt Airport was ranked number 13 in the world for freight volume in 2018, and is the busiest cargo airport in Europe. Annual freight throughput is over two million tonnes. With logistics facilities aplenty, the air-cargo terminal complex is a vital European multimodal hub, and not surprisingly, is named CargoCity. The northern section of the complex is the home of Lufthansa Cargo, Germany’s flagship freight carrier.
UAE Airports Served: Abu Dhabi, Dubai.
Frankfurt to UAE Cargo-Only Operators: ASL Airlines Belgium, Cathay Pacific Cargo, China Airlines, Emirates SkyCargo, Etihad Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Maximus Air Cargo.
IATA Code: FRA.
Munich Airport is the largest air cargo hub in Southern Germany, and handles around a third of all Germany’s air freight. The airport’s freight terminal covers an area of 84,000 square meters, and has scope for further expansion in the future.
If your business—or your supplier—operates in Germany’s southern regions, and you plan to export to the Emirates, flying freight out of Munich might make sense. It should not prove too much more expensive than sending it overland to the ocean ports of the north, and then onward by container vessel. It will undoubtedly be a lot faster.
UAE Airports Served: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah.
Munich to UAE Cargo-Only Operators: None.
IATA Code: MUC.
The primary airport for Germany’s second-largest city, Flughafen Hamburg benefits from a modern air-cargo center opened in 2016. The HACC is linked directly to the airport's apron by a 60-meter underpass under the adjacent highway and has an annual theoretical capacity of 150,000 tonnes of air freight.
Packed with state-of-the-art technology, the center integrates all inbound and outbound freight activities, including forwarding, customs, inspections, storage, and palletization, ensuring smooth and rapid handling for your exports to the UAE.
UAE Airports Served: Dubai.
Hamburg to UAE Cargo-Only Operators: None.
IATA Code: HAM.
Dusseldorf Airport is the third-largest in Germany, after Frankfurt and Munich, and in 2018, handled around 75,000 tonnes of air freight. Located close to the city of Dusseldorf, it is also conveniently located as a gateway for products originating in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, the largest urban conurbation in Germany.
UAE Airports Served: Abu Dhabi, Dubai.
Dusseldorf to UAE Cargo-Only Operators: None.
IATA Code: DUS.
Nuremberg Airport is the tenth-largest in Germany and the second busiest in the state of Bavaria. It is also the airport that serves the industrial and commercial region of Franconia, where many international companies have their headquarters. If your products originate in this part of Germany, we can help you get them to the UAE quickly and smoothly via air freight services from Nuremberg Airport.
UAE Airports Served: Dubai.
Nuremberg to UAE Cargo-Only Operators: None.
IATA Code: NUE.
Other Airports in Germany
In addition to the gateways of Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, and Nuremberg, Shipa Freight can help you ship your imports into the United Arab Emirates via airports in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Leipzig. Note though, that flights from these locations will typically be indirect and involve at least one transshipment.
International Air Freight From Germany: UAE Import Gateways
Dubai International Airport
Possibly one of the most impressive airports anywhere, Dubai International is the sixth-busiest cargo airport in the world, and the most important gateway for air freight arriving in the UAE. It also happens to be the home of Emirates SkyCargo, the world’s second-largest cargo-only carrier after FedEx Express.
Perhaps thanks to the presence of Emirates cargo division, and Dubai's location at the crossroads of East and West, freight volumes are continually increasing at the airport's cargo terminal. There is an irony in the fact that the terminal goes by the somewhat diminishing moniker of "Dubai Airport Cargo Village."
In reality, the facility is nowhere near as diminutive as its name suggests, given that more than 30 airlines have offices in the "village" and that the airport handles around 2.5 million tonnes of freight annually.
Connected Airports in Germany: Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Leipzig, Nuremberg.
Germany to Dubai Cargo-Only Operators: Emirates SkyCargo.
IATA Code: DXB.
Dubai Al Maktoum
Following its opening in 2010, Al Maktoum International airport has operated predominantly as a cargo airport. Over the course of the next decade though, planned expansions should see it evolve into one of the world's biggest passenger hubs. Already it is a key import and export gateway for Shipa Freight customers trading in (or with partners in) Dubai and the other states of the UAE.
Connected Airports in Germany: Berlin, Dusseldorf, Liepzig, Nuremberg, Frankfurt.
Germany to Al Maktoum Cargo-Only Operators: Emirates SkyCargo, China Airlines Cargo.
IATA Code: DWC.
The second-busiest freight airport in the Emirates is Abu Dhabi International, with an annual throughput approaching 1 million tonnes. While we can route your air freight through this airport to any location in the UAE, it makes the most sense to do so with shipments bound for Abu Dhabi itself.
Connected Airports in Germany: Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich.
Germany to Abu Dhabi Cargo-Only Operators: Etihad Cargo.
IATA Code: AUH.
Sharjah is the third air-freight import gateway through which Shipa Freight can help you import your goods from Germany. Like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Sharjah has modern freight-handling facilities, able to manage everything from dry to temperature-controlled goods and livestock. The five cargo terminals are linked to an apron with space for 13 aircraft.
Connected Airports in Germany: Frankfurt, Leipzig.
Germany to Sharjah Cargo-Only Operators: DHL Aviation, Lufthansa Cargo.
IATA Code: SHJ.
Air Freight From Germany to the UAE: Routes and Transit Times
As you will see in the table below, it only takes a few hours to fly freight from Germany to the UAE, regardless of the specific route we use for your shipments. However, air freight will typically take several days to reach its destination if you book door-to-door shipping. Even if you opt for airport-to-airport, you must still allow a couple of business days either side of the flight date for customs clearance in both countries.
|Airport of Origin||Destination Airport||Est. Transit Time|
|Dusseldorf||Abu Dhabi||6 Hours|
|Frankfurt||Abu Dhabi||6 Hours|
|Munich||Abu Dhabi||6 Hours|
